Law of At the 2st century, the law enforcement administrators of both small and large areas are faced with diverse challenges, which range from the universal administration to individual issues of police officers. This essay seeks to examine the primary challenges that face chief of police in a large area, skills required for administration of a large area, essential values of a police chief and his role in decision making. Primary challenges facing a police chief in New York City As a point of departure, police chiefs face tremendous challenges on administration of the juniors or officers in this matter, particularly in large cities. For instance, in New York City, some of the primary challenges that face the police administrators include police brutality and hiring of wrong people to the service. For the case of police brutality, numerous cases of police officers brutalizing the public have been recorded over time. This a primary challenge to the police chief because, the essence of any police department in the world is to administer the rule of law in a just, fair and non-brutal manner. As much as most decisions are made in a split of minutes, sometimes the police officer goes beyond limits to assault members of the public. For instance, there have been reported cases of police officers physically and sexually abusing members of the public (Wasserman & Williams, 1988). A police chief in this case finds him/herself in a complicated position in dealing his matter, particularly in a large city like New York City, were numerous modalities are required to identify the victims. Te challenge of establishing the cases faces the police chief. On equal measure, the issue of hiring wrong people to the service in a large area likes New York is a bit complicated to hire the right people into the service. Recruitment from the military and from the public without proper examination of these individuals for issues related to corruption, brutality contributes to having a wrong group of police in the service and this is a primary challenge facing the police chiefs (Wasserman & Williams, 1988). In essence, hiring of wrong people compromises the accountability of police officers in the service, when carrying out their duties. The other challenge is accountability or corruption. Most officers are corrupt, particularly on the issues dealing with drug trafficking. On the other hand, some of the skills a police chief in cities such as New York require for effective administration include dynamism a, collaborative thinking and leading from the center of leadership. A police chief needs to be dynamic because of the ever-changing society and consequently the nature of crime (Fitch, 2011). This facilitates the police chief to come up with amicable strategies, which apply in the present dynamic milieu. Secondly, the issue of collaborative thinking is fundamental in decision-making. The police chief need to think widely in consultation with is inner team before making any sensitive decision (Fitch, 2011). A lot of information is required to make a collaborative decision. On equal measure, Leading from the center of leadership is an essential skill for a police chief. For one-way direction leadership, the police chief should ensure that decisions are made from one central point. Upon consultation with all the stakeholders on an issue, a decision should be made and announced from a central position to avoid conflicting decisions, which may hinder effective operation. For the case of ethics and character of a police chief in a large city such as New York, the aspects of accountability and morally upright forms center stage for effective administration. The position of a police chief is influential and sensitive and it requires a dedicated and a morally guided individual to steer the wheel for positive outcomes to be realized. A police chief should be ones and accountable. Issues of honesty and accountability have ruined numerous police service units across the world and this mean that; the police chief should lead by example (Police Leadership in the 21st Century, 1999). A police chief must ensure that, reported cases of corruption should be handled and determined in a transparent manner. Handling of such cases with outmost honesty sends a signal to the junior police officer who may intend to commit similar crimes to desist from wrong thinking. Conversely, the aspect of morally upright is critical for nay successful and efficient police chief. Most police services have lost fame and consequent fall out because of immoral police chiefs. An efficient police chief must be morally upright, particularly on issues related to sexual behaviors. Most police units have failed because of immoral police chiefs who taint the standing of reputable police departments in essence, morality is a fundamental aspect for a successive career as a police chief.
